UK Pop Chart: 24 February 2008

Hi! Thanks for visiting Unreality Music! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed for regular updates.

Welcome back for another run down of the UK’s top ten! In this edition, I’m going to moan about how hard it is to write the chart run-down when the tunes stay the same each week.

Nickelback, Rihanna and Kelly Rowland have been hanging around the chart for weeks and weeks, and I have officially run out of things to say about these singles. So, spare me the mental block and fill in your own thoughts in the comments, eh?

  1. Duffy - Mercy: Musical environmentalists rejoice - Duffy’s chart success is a small victory for recycling bygone musical genres and squeezing a few quid for those struggling record companies. Unfortunately, pensioners are wandering around Tesco confused as to what decade they’re in. If we end up with a bunch of Duffy copycats, there’s going to be an epidemic.
  2. H Two O ft Platnum - What’s It Gonna Be?: A lukewarm urban dance track, not quite as good as others that have been successful in the charts lately.
  3. Nickelback - Rockstar: Your first opportunity to fill in the blanks. Do you think Nickelback have cheapened themselves with this single (as I do), or will it be good for their careers?
  4. Basshunter - Now You’re Gone: I predicted that this would promptly disappear from the charts last week, but Basshunter have proved me wrong, so no smug looks on my face peeps. Damn.
  5. Kylie Minogue - Wow: You’re wow, wow, wow, wow. Hey, you weren’t in the top ten last week, Kylie. Snuck in there off the back of the Brits, did ya?
  6. Adele - Chasing Pavements: I keep doing u-turns on this song. I love it. Then I think it’s all a big music industry setup - how DARE they tell me Adele’s a great artist? Damn the Brit Academy! DAMN THEM! But it’s pretty catchy, isn’t it? Aaarrggghhh!
  7. David Jordan - Sun Goes Down: I still like this - David kind of looks a bit like Prince in his quirky dancing and well, he looks a little bit short and intense too. He’s probably not just as weird as all that though.
  8. Rihanna - Don’t Stop The Music: Yummy Rihanna…oh, you know the deal by now. Insert your own fawning comment about how brilliant Rihanna is, I give up!
  9. OneRepublic - Stop And Stare: Here we go - OneRepublic have taken the Timbaland stabilisers off, and they’ve cycled into the charts all by themselves! I feel like a proud parent…
  10. Kelly Rowland - Work*: In contrast to OneRepublic above, it feels like Kelly’s brilliant track got very little airplay. Shockingly little, considering that it’s probably the best damn track in this top ten!

* In the interests of honesty, Work actually came on Radio 1 as I was typing this. And you wonder why I haven’t given up the day job yet…
