Funny, I feel strangely warm toward Travis. Nostalgic, I suppose. During their golden years (the mid-to-late 90’s), Travis released an amazing string of acoustic guitar led singles that - for me - partly defined that era.
Then they disappeared, popping up now and again to get involved with the odd event, like Make Poverty History.
So - yay! - it’s good to see Travis back again. Shockingly, the sound of new single Closer is very consistent with their earlier stuff. And while I might slate any other band for not moving on musically, well….this is Travis and for some reason, they’re exempt. Well, not to everybody:
Closer is an inoffensive but bland coffee table track which, though Fran Healy’s voice is as warmly comforting as ever, is likely to appeal to loyal fans longing for a return to those salad days, but not to propel them back into the leading pack.
Having said that, if you believe this review of their new album The Boy With No Name, the artistic progression may come in the form of a future single. Yes, they’re now competing with bands like Coldplay and Snow Patrol that they no doubt inspired, but I’ve no doubt there’s still room in the charts for Travis.
