This is too much…Girls Aloud. In PVC catsuits. With a really rockin’ new tune.
Let’s face it, these girls are probably the best musical act to originate from a reality television show. They’ve had a string of major hits in the UK, whoever is selecting their songs for them is a genius (and we suspect it isn’t Louis Walsh).

Well well. All hail the nation’s most celebrated junkie – the ‘venerable’ Pete Doherty – has got his shit together for long enough to release a single with Babyshambles.
I have to admit to being one of those tabloid readers who scratches my head at every Doherty story and wonders if I’ve ever heard one of his songs. Well, now I have.

I think legally no publication in the UK is allowed to criticise the Gossip or Beth Ditto at the moment. Ditto seems to have become an overnight sensation and media darling in the UK. It’s not without substance either, because while you’ll read a lot about her view on weight issues, she’s a disarmingly funny and entertaining personality. I watched her guest stint on the Friday Night Project, and loved her sense of humour.

Well here we go for the hundredth time kids, another Linkin Park single, video and subsequent review. Bleed It Out – for the record – is probably my favourite song from the Minutes To Midnight album.
Reasons to love Bleed It Out are legion: it follows the winning Linkin Park formula, it’s one of the few songs on Minutes To Midnight to feature a rap by Mike Shinoda. Oh and it’s got expletives! Yay!

The Angry Mob is the third single from the Kaiser Chiefs‘ Yours Truly, Angry Mob album. In contrast to the preceding single, Everything Is Average, The Angry Mob is a much more engaging tune and does a far better job of getting its point across. For me, the Angry Mob single (and video) hark back to I Predict A Riot territory and Ricky Wilson makes some great social commentary:

August 19th, 2007 by Gerard McGarry. Tags: 2007, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Thumbs Up

Kanye West has just hit number 1 in the UK with his latest single, Stronger. Unsurprisingly really, considering that he’s been doing a serious promotional round this week that included an appearance at Radio 1 and taking on the guest host spot on the Friday Night Project.
Stronger lifts a massive chunk of Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. The electronica is a huge departure for Kanye, considering the style we’d become accustomed to on Late Registration. Hard to get used to at first, because the Daft Punk sample is so high in the mix, but you do get used to it and you do find yourself trying to sing in a vocoder style…

You can’t go anywhere this week without hearing 17 year old Sean Kingston’s smooth reggae track Beautiful Girls. Unfortunately – due to its lyrical content - also known The Suicide Song.
Beautiful Girls takes the bassline from Ben E. King’s Stand By Me and marries it with a cool, syncopated beat and some nice orchestration (especially at the end).

Just for a change, I’m gonna review the live version of Kings Of Leon’s storming new single, Fans. And I’ll be putting on my novice hat again, because somehow I’ve been blissfully unaware of Kings Of Leon until lately…
Well, until this track, to be honest. But what a track! Fans has all the hallmarks of a classic.

The Dixie Chicks have been off my radar since 1998’s single There’s Your Trouble. They never really established themselves in the UK after that, unfortunately. Off course, a couple of years ago they hit the headlines worldwide when singer Natalie Maines openly criticised George Bush with the now infamous statement:
We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.
The Long Way Around is the lead track from their latest album after those remarks, and a number of the songs address that issue.

Generator is going to be a massive single for The Holloways when it’s released next week.
The single was originally released last autumn and charted at #30. However, in the last couple of weeks, I’ve heard Generator all over the place. Radio 1 in particular seem to be supporting the track, so expect it to go a bit higher this time!
