Well, they promised us different, and I can confirm that Coldplay have delivered something different. But is it good? Hell yeah.
Even speaking as a determined Coldplay hater, Violet Hill sounds dark, foreboding, and heavy. Less of the piano-sturbation, and Chris Martin retires the falsetto in favour of a more earthy vocal tone.

So, you’re in the club, chatting up a girl you’ve met. Next thing she’s wearing your bloody Rolex. Happens me all the time, folks, so I’m glad Wiley wrote a song about it.
Seriously though, tracks like this are taking over the charts, and with good reason. There’s been an explosion of UK urban talent recently. Not that guys like Wiley haven’t always been around – it’s just that they’re crossing over into the mainstream in their droves. It’s practically an invasion.

Come on, let be honest – who thought Jimmy Eat World probably broke up ages ago? Well, apparently they didn’t. And this new single Always Be is proof.
Although the song and its supremely polished production simply scream “radio-friendly hit single”, I can’t bring myself to hate this. It’s the kind of track I absolutely love – fast paced, urgent and melodic. It’s fair to say the Jimmy Eat World guys have a knack for this kind of power pop.

Poor old Jamie, he took a battering from musicOMH in their review of Standing In The Rain. To add insult to injury, they likened the poor guy to my all-time most loathed artist – James Blunt.
Nobody is that bad. And we loved their impromptu cover of Bleeding Love back in November.

Getting oodles of radio play this week is Bloc Party’s latest single, Flux. It’s a radical departure for the band, which led to them speaking out to reassure fans that their forthcoming album wouldn’t be an all-disco effort. Phew!
I hesitate to use the word ‘nu-rave’ which has been dropped by other reviewers. But how to describe Flux to you? It’s kind of a crossover of Indie sensibilities and disco.

By my count, Do It is the fifth single from Nelly Furtado’s Loose album. We’re assuming it’s going to be the last until she releases her next album.
However, when you remember that this awesome run of singles started with sexed-up songs like Promiscuous and Maneater, Do It seems like flimsy pop fare by comparison.

Say what you like about them, but Girls Aloud have consistently released good pop music since they graduated from Popstars: The Rivals all those years ago. Surfing through the music channels, there always seems to be a best of Girls Aloud programme running.
Call The Shots is the latest single from the girls, and once again it’s a belter.

Let’s get this out of the way at the start: Adam Levine’s vocals on Won’t Go Home Without You bear more than a passing resemblance to Phil Collins. And the bassline bears a similarity to Every Breath You Take by The Police.
OK, on the chorus Adam gets a little bit high pitched, but you could totally see Phil Collins performing this song, couldn’t you?

When last we saw James Blunt, he was diving stark naked into what looked like a freezing cold ocean. He’d just dropped You’re Beautiful on an unsuspecting world and, sensing that there’d be an all-male lynch mob out to get him for releasing such muck, he’s laid low for a respectable amount of time.

We’re loving the new Biffy Clyro single, Machines at Unreality Music. In fact, it’s safe to say that Biffy Clyro are fast becoming a favourite band with us.
Machines is such a beautiful, melancholy song which I believe deals with the death of singer Simon Neil’s mother. I think because the song is so obviously personal, it’s one of those tracks that you listen to and have a lump in your throat by the end.
