It may be worth noting, dear reader, that the title is not Here Come The Girls. It is merely Girls. Very minimalist.

And although the Sugababes only released their fifth album (Change) last October, this new single is from their forthcoming sixth album. Entitled Catfights And Spotlights. That should scotch any more rumours of the trio breaking up for a while at least!

Now – on to Girls. It’s not often you get a pop group ruthlessly ripping off songs from adverts. Normally it works the other way round, doesn’t it? Song becomes famous, advertisers queue up to play it over pictures of their product.

There’s a major criticism that the ‘babes are borrowing heavily from the Ronson-style brass-sections-du-jour, and contributing nothing original. That’s fair, but at least Girls has a bit more kick than anything they released off the last album. In fact, judging on the video, it’s straying into stripper music country.

Priya Elan, writing for The Guardian, suggests that the group have lost their way and questions whether the talent Sugababes have already left the building:

Where [is] the Numan splice-up of Freak Like Me, or the poised pop of Overload? But by now they seemed more concerned with their range of Mattel dolls and their brand of shoes. Certainly the music that former members Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy made after their departures from the group, suggests that they took the creative spark with them.

But what do you think folks? Are the Sugababes on a downward spiral, or is Girls just a great track to dance around yer handbag to down the local disco?

Girls is the first single from the Sugababes sixth album, Catfights And Spotlights and is released on 6 October.

We here at Unreality Music don’t need much of an excuse to cast off our clothes. So, imagine our delight when the virtually unknown Ida Maria started getting airplay with this absolutely epic tune.

What with Katy Perry trying the bi-curious angles this summer, and this thumping rock anthem dedicated to getting yer kit off, we like to think that the charts are temporarily a much hornier place…

OK, so someone whose personal esteem depends on another person being starkers might not be in perfect mental balance, but hey-ho. When a tune this brilliant is the result, we can’t really complain.

It’s easy to imagine the doors of student digs bursting open all across the UK this autumn as drunken freshers re-enact the lyrics with whoever they pulled down the SU that night.

Mixtape Maestro utters a fantastic line…

Who’d-a thunk that witnessing one woman’s uncomfortable detour into skank-ville could be as endlessly entertaining as this?”

This song gets an enthusiastic thumbs up from us, and the warning that with a debut single this good, you’ll be hearing a lot more about this Ida Marie person in the future!

Anyway, this isn’t about jungle lady, or pants, it’s about Amerie’s new single Take Control. Who knows what she does between singles, but I haven’t heard of Amerie since 1 Thing.

Take Control perhaps isn’t as catchy a track as 1 Thing, it doesn’t have the immediate appeal. It could be a slow burner, though. It’s got a funky guitar riff running right through it, a sexy R&B vocal from Amerie. On the down side, it can be a bit repetitive and probably lasts a full minute too long.

On the plus side, it’s great stripper music!

Anyhoo, you don’t pair up these particular singers without having one hell of a hot track to play, and Beautiful Liar is red hot! You’ve got a smouldering Eastern-influenced track which opens with one or the other panting some lyrics.

Beautiful Liar is going to be all over the radio in the next few days like a rash, so get ready for the onslaught. As usual, the eye candy element is not lost on me. There are others who feel the same way:

Beyonce’s been trying her damnedest to look Latina for quite some time now. A few years back I turned on Saturday Night Live and thought I was looking at Jennifer Lopez. She’s been Beyonce K. Starr ever since. In this video, I can’t even always tell who’s Shakira and who’s not… until they start moving.

Final thought: I can’t remember Beyonce collaborating with a female artist in her post-Destiny’s Child career, so this is a notable event! Anyway, with its hypnotic beat and diva-grade singers, Beautiful Liar definitely earns the rank of Stripper Music! Congratulations girls!

Let’s face it, there isn’t much pretence – the name Pussycat Dolls has lap dancing written all over it, as do the dance routines, as do the tunes. Hell, I’m not complaining!

Anyway, in the video for Wait A Minute, it seems they’ve landed jobs a spies. Well, until they break into a poledancing routine on the subway which spills out into the street :) Timbaland – apparently a must-have for music videos these days – is along for the ride on this tune as well.

Wait A Minute is classic Pussycat Dolls – foxy, infectious pop music with a chorus that gets into your head and feet! Timbaland doesn’t add much more than his name to the song, and he’s little more than a prop in the video. But it seems to be law in the US that he appear in every pop video released, so I’ll shut up about that!
