Alongside Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, Poison were undoubtedly one of the biggest names in hard rock in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

Unbelievably, Poison are still together 21 years after their first album - Look What The Cat Dragged In - was released. Earlier this summer, Poison released their 9th album - Poison’d - featuring their favourite covers from their career. Being a fan of their earlier work, I decided to put together this history of the band told using their albums as milestones.

I hear that Bret Michael’s and the boys are back today with a new album of exclusively cover versions. Poison’d is the first studio release from Poison since 2002’s Hollyweird.

It’s a bit disappointing that the guys aren’t releasing an album of their own material. They’re a little far on in their career to be relying on a bunch of songs other people have made popular.

If you want a wee taster of Poison’d, head over to the band’s MySpace page. They’ve got a few tunes from the album. What I Like About You is an interesting track, with a sound that harks back to early Poison (there’s a guitar run that sound like it was lifted off Look what The Cat Dragged In), although their version of Suffragette City doesn’t bring anything interesting to the table.

Back in the year of Our Lord, 1990, my favourite hair-metal act released a new album - Flesh & Blood - and a brilliant new single: Unskinny Bop. This was Poison’s third album, and a markedly more mature sound for the band.
