Yes, the man who wore some of the largest glasses in showbiz ironically claims that people sitting at home making their own records “doesn’t bode well for artistic vision”.

Bloody hell. Get a grip, Elton. The Internet has opened up a whole new avenue of content distribution, from peer to peer networks to YouTube to Pandora and Last.fm.

Advances in computing have leveled the playing field and allowed aspiring artists to lay down tracks on their home computers and distribute their tunes either via personal homepages or MySpace.

I will grant the rock dinosaur one thing: there’s an awful lot of dross out there. But dross doesn’t often float to the top. Only the best or most interesting artists will capture people’s hearts and receive those all-important word-of-mouth recommendations. Remember, pop music by its very nature is popular music. If the general public don’t like it, they don’t buy it, talk about it or sing it in the shower.

Frankly, I’m appalled that a man who publicly calls Victoria Beckham a friend can come out and criticize the Internet for propagating poor quality music. Perhaps Mr John should start wearing those oversized specs again…

Let’s face it, Adler’s Appetite would probably run out of steam pretty quickly, leaving the other members just an over-glorified tribute band. And I don’t understand where he’s getting the idea that the other Gunners are buying into the idea. None of them seem to have commented publicly so far.

Which – I think you’ll agree – leaves the most washed-up member of the classic Guns N’ Roses lineup craving a reunion. Hmmm. If you were Adler, would you rather be in a tribute band to GNR or be back in the drum stool behind your old compadres?

Do We Want A GNR Reunion?

Well, as we approach our mid-life crises, a Guns N’ Roses reunion sounds vaguely appealing. I never got to see them live back in the day. But as far as I know, Axl hasn’t had a personality transplant and Velvet Revolver still seem to be doing fairly well for themselves.

However, if the Billboard article above is to be believed, demand for Adler’s Appetite must convert into interest in classic GNR. But Axl is a notoriously petty little dictator. I can’t see him going for it. Plus, from what I’ve read, he hasn’t got any more reliable over the years – he still fails to show at gigs and stuff like that.

So, for the record – and considering I was listening to Appetite For Destruction on the way to work this morning – I don’t want a Guns N’ Roses reunion. If Adler’s got a tribute band going, that’s alright with me. If they show up in Belfast, I’ll go along. Likewise Velvet Revolver.

It’s funny, but after Axl destroyed the band all those years ago, I have absolutely no desire to see him live or hear another record of his except those masterworks he helped create back in ‘88 to ‘92.
