I love it when Kanye gets pissy with critics!

Kanye West

Do you think Kanye West takes himself too seriously? He’s well known for blowing up at award shows when he gets stiffed by the establishment in favour of other acts.

Anyway, he took exception to a review of his Seattle gig by Entertainment Weekly where they rated the show a B+.

The review is actually full of praise for Kanye’s performance, but calls into question the ‘conceptual hokeyness’ of the show, evidenced by a talking spaceship:

Kanye West - Flashing Lights

kanye-flashing-lights

You can’t keep Kanye out of the charts these days, can you? His latest, Flashing Lights, isn’t getting quite as much attention as his collaboration with Estelle, but it’s doing pretty well all the same.

Flashing Lights tackles the thorny issue of how famous folks manage to have affairs while they’re in the limelight. Basically, they can’t. And those flashing lights belong to the paparazzi that follow Kanye and his peers around everywhere.

Estelle ft Kanye West - American Boy

estelle-american-boy

West London’s Estelle manages to score a home run by getting Kanye West to collaborate and will.i.am to twiddle the knobs on this funky, funky track.

Estelle has been lurking around the lower reaches of the pop chart for a few years now. However, her musical releases have been inconsistent enough that she hasn’t hit the mainstream…until now.

Kanye West ft Chris Martin - Homecoming - Single Review

Kanye West - Homecoming

Problem. I love Kanye West, but I hate Chris Martin. And yet here they are, collaborating on West’s latest single, Homecoming.

I have to admit, Chris Martin was the last person I expected to find on a Kanye West track. Taking whiny Indie vocals and adding them to a hip-hop track doesn’t work.

Billie Jean ‘08 - Kanye West Remix

Really? Was Kanye West involved in this musical disaster, surely a shoe-in for the worst song of 2007?

Not only was Billie Jean both dated and overplayed already, but some genius decided to slow the whole thing down to the point where it feels like your mental capacity is diminishing at an alarming rate (quick, somebody speak to me at normal speed!).

Have you ever been in that stage of drunkenness where everything sounds slightly muffled and slowed down? That’s how listening to this feels. What comes next when you’re drunk is spewing the contents of your stomach into the nearest toilet bowl.

Shockingly, that’s how I felt by the time this ‘remix’ of Billie Jean had limped to the finish. So desperate for a reality check was I that I searched for the original video to compare.

I know Michael Jackson is in need of a few extra quid at the moment, but shame on Kanye for lending his name to such a dire remix. Just awful.

Kanye West ft T-Pain - Good Life

kanye-west-good-life

Earlier this week, Kanye West released the second single from his Graduation album, Good Life.

What can we say? West is one of those rappers who always gets it right. Good Life shows that while he can rap along with the best of them, Kanye also has an ear for a good tune, mixing in parts of Michael Jackson’s Pretty Young Thing.

Kanye West v 50 Cent: Who Are You Backing?

[tags]Kanye West, 50 Cent, Deadly Feuds, Rap[/tags]

kanye-v-50-cent

You all know the story - 50 Cent has threatened never to release another album if Kanye West’s new CD outsells his. The full 50 Cent quote is:

Put it like this, let’s raise the stakes. If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11, I’ll no longer write music. I’ll write music and work with my other artists, but I won’t put out any more solo albums.

Well, so far Kanye West’s in the lead sales wise. I have to say, I believe that Kanye deserves this more - he’s charismatic, he’s passionate, he’s an interesting character. 50 Cent on the other hand doesn’t interest me at all. He’s another by-product from the Dre/Eminem school of rap, but he neither matches or surpasses either of his mentors.

Kanye’s taken rap music to a new place, he’s made it interesting again. 50 is still punting out old style gangsta rap that the mainstream has been getting bored of.

so I’m betting on Kanye West to win, and I’m hoping ‘Fitty’ upholds his end of the bargain by not releasing any more albums. That’d suit me just fine.

Tell me in the comments who you’re hoping will win…

Kanye West - Stronger - Single Review

Kanye West - Stronger

Kanye West has just hit number 1 in the UK with his latest single, Stronger. Unsurprisingly really, considering that he’s been doing a serious promotional round this week that included an appearance at Radio 1 and taking on the guest host spot on the Friday Night Project.

Stronger lifts a massive chunk of Daft Punk’s Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. The electronica is a huge departure for Kanye, considering the style we’d become accustomed to on Late Registration. Hard to get used to at first, because the Daft Punk sample is so high in the mix, but you do get used to it and you do find yourself trying to sing in a vocoder style…
