As the U2 publicity juggernaut invades every possible pop culture show on the planet, Bono soundbites are becoming unfortunately more frequent. And about as welcome as a dose of gonorrhea.
The latest is what seems to be a back-handed compliment to Coldplay’s Chris Martin. After initially calling him a wanker, Bono went on to praise Martin’s ‘genius’, saying:
Obviously he is a completely dysfunctional character and a cretin but he happens to be a genius melodist and I think up there with Ray Davies and Noel Gallagher and Paul McCartney.
Coldplay front man, Chris Martin has revealed that the band would love to play a big stadium show next summer and would be happy to open one of Take That’s shows on their Circus tour.
Posting on the band’s website, Chris wrote: “I would open for Take That. We were in the dressing room the other day and, for whatever reason, we started singing ‘Back For Good’.
“We sang the whole thing, word for word, with all the right chords on our piano, without having to learn it or anything. It was great.
Well, they promised us different, and I can confirm that Coldplay have delivered something different. But is it good? Hell yeah.
Even speaking as a determined Coldplay hater, Violet Hill sounds dark, foreboding, and heavy. Less of the piano-sturbation, and Chris Martin retires the falsetto in favour of a more earthy vocal tone.
Misery-rockers Coldplay are to release their new single Violet Hill as a free download which will be available from their website from 12:15pm today. Presumably the timing is to coincide with the radio premiere of the song on Jo Whiley’s radio show this morning.
Jo’s show runs until 12:45, so I’d imagine you can expect to hear Violet Hill some time around 12:00. Maybe just listen to the whole show to be sure, though – I don’t want you blaming me if you miss it!
