In other Britney news today, it seems Britney’s website has a new section dedicated to making fun of the paparazzi.

She (or more accurately the people behind the website) calls this “The Paparazzies” because it makes fun of the people who are following her around 24/7.

The inaugural post on the Paparazzies section states their mission quite clearly:

Terrorizing Britney has unfortunately become a daily part of the paparazzi’s lives. So, we’ve decided to start calling these maniacs out each week by awarding a PapaRAZZIE to the worst of the worst!

It shows the general chaos that follows the paparazzi as they chase celebrities around in the hope of getting a shot of their prey. One video shows a photographer falling backwards over a plant pot in a mad dash to get a picture.

I wonder if this will help bring to light the frenzy that celebs have to suffer on a daily basis. You may not have much sympathy for them, but you only have to watch some of these videos to realise how scary it might be to have to face the paparazzi every time you open your front door.

Check out Britney’s Paparazzies section on her website.

Looking for all the world like those fake nude shots of Britney that used to do the rounds on the Internet, yes…this is the cover for her new album, Circus.

This is cheap and tacky on a whole new level, almost reminiscent of one of those old K-Tel compilations. You’d think that the marketing people would have insisted on more than a really ugly photo, some washed-out colours and bad typography.

And since Britney’s long-running meltdown, something about that face still has a hint of repressed crazy about it, and to this day I find myself wondering if she’s grown her hair back or if it’s just a wig.

Britney’s new single, Womanizer, is splitting opinions everywhere.

Where some reviewers are captivated by the futuristic electronic fuzz and the heavily processed vocals, others like the stalwart pop commentator Bill Lamb remain unimpressed.

It all sounds like a rather weak attempt to approach the attitude of Katy Perry in a classic Britney futuristic bubblegum pop context. Unfortunately, after a few listens it all becomes quite dull.

Having watched from the sidelines as Britney descended into her well-chronicled mental breakdown, I want to believe reports of her recovery. I certainly want to see her have a triumphant comeback.

Like Bill, Womanizer leaves me cold. If I wanted a blast of semi-burlesque pop music, I’d have referred to Perry or the recently reunited Pussycat Dolls.

Just in case there was too much dissent from the ranks, Brit’s recorded quite a raunchy video to accompany the song. I really think I liked her better when she was playing the coy all-American teen though…

Ultimately, Womanizer is one of those songs that really doesn’t have much interesting to say. I think we’re looking to the next single already to see if Britney can regain her pop crown.

“I’m Miss American Dream since I was 17″, sings Britney in Piece Of Me. Well, until a couple of years ago, this was true. Nowadays, she’s more of a hideous freakin’ nightmare.

No doubt the geniuses behind this ditty thought it would be funny to play on Britney’s tabloid image. But Piece Of Me reflects how far the mighty Britney has fallen.

Perhaps they didn’t know that she’d lose custody of her kids. The song was written ages ago, but released at such a bad time.

Besides, what does the lyric “and with a kid on my arm/I’m still an exceptional earner” mean? You’d never catch Will Smith describe his children as “a kid” in a song. The difference between a parent who cares and one who doesn’t?

And as for pictures of her derriere – put some bloody pants on! Stop giving the paparazzi so many gynaecological photo opportunities! I’m serious.

Grudgingly I admit that I like the tune, it’s a major improvement on the turgid grind-fest that was Gimme More. But although in the video it looks like the old Britney’s back – long blonde hair, midriff exposed – I can’t help but thinking there’s someone who’s seriously mentally ill pretending her soap-opera lifestyle is funny. I can’t help thinking that Piece Of Me is a major embarrassment for Britney.

If I was advising her, I’d have perhaps told her not to release this one. It just cements her image as a media whore.

I couldn’t go through today without talking about the furore Britney Spears caused at the MTV Video Music Awards. It’s all over the Internet today.

First, let me point out that it’s been a couple of years since Britney released a single. She’s not been ‘news’ in the music world in those years.

Instead, Britney’s taken the sideways move toward being gossip column fodder. And she obviously sells papers and the Internet gossip columnists regularly pick over her latest gaffes like the vultures they are.

Britney In The Beginning

When Britney hit the big time back in 1998, she was all of 17 years old. I remember being impressed with the airy pop sensibilities and her apparent media awareness. She talked in some interviews about how she was marketed and seemed to understand a fair bit about the business.

The winning streak continued for her well into the 2000’s, until the adoring media suddenly turned on her. A girl in her early 20’s. All of a sudden, the knives came out. How must that have felt?

Turning Points

Since 2004, Britney’s made a number of questionable decisions in her professional and private life. There was one ill advised marriage. Then another. I don’t think this was a co-incidence, I think she was looking for some kind of belonging.

Then of course, came the kids. Two children born in one year. That’s actually a lot. Consider post-natal depression. Consider tabloid speculation about her relationship with Kevin Federline.

Since January of this year, her freefall has been well chronicled across the web. Her aunt died at the start of the year. Britney went to rehab in February, shaved her head the very next day. She’s been linked to a number of different men, and faced allegations about her parenting. Her divorce was completed in July.

That’s a lot of personal stuff to go through in one year. Now, try going through it with a paparazzi lens stuck in your damn face.

What Next For Britney?

I’m writing this post in response to all the Britney-hating posts I’ve read on the web today. The girl is obviously in pain. She doesn’t need this pressure.

I found the video footage of her at the VMAs disturbing. She looked awkward and nervous. And she wasn’t dressed sexy – not because she’s overweight, she looked fine to me. But in the past she was confident on stage. That’s the difference.

Attempting such a large-scale comeback was a bad idea. No doubt.

After the VMA debacle, Britney needs to do some serious thinking. First: does she want to continue in music? If so, work on it. And if you’re performing live, stop lip-synching and get the dance moves back up to standard.

If music’s not her thing, she should withdraw from the public eye. Issue a statement to say that she’s retiring from music. Get some tasteful ‘mummy’ clothes and don’t give the tabloids any ammo for a year or so. Focus on the kids. The tabloids will get bored and go away. If not, they’ll fill the space with pictures of what a great mum she’s become. If there’s one thing celebs love (almost) as much as a train wreck, it’s a doting celebrity parent.

If I were in Britney’s position, I’d retire and use my money to launch the careers of new acts. That’s a lucrative game, and she’d potentially be great at it.
