In an unusual twist, one of my favourite bands from last year – Alphabeat – have split with their record label, EMI.
This is a brave move, especially when you consider they’re on the verge of recording the follow-up to the highly successful This Is Alphabeat.
The rumour mill went into overdrive, with most people suggesting that the band had been dropped by their record label. In a blog post clarifying their position, the band say it was the other way round:
Those colourful Danish wags, Alphabeat, are back with yet another piece of pop brilliance.
Of the many versions that are available, there’s a remix that places Boyfriend straight back into the 80’s.
Alphabeat aren’t one of those bands you listen to looking if you’re…say looking for the meaning of life. Or anything deep like that. What you’re more likely to get is pure bubblegum pop, and Boyfriend hits the spot on so many levels.
With a name like Alphabeat, you sort of expect a b-grade dance act. What you get is so much better. Fascination is one of those happy tracks that unearths the best cheesy pop of the 1980’s and runs with it as if the last two decades never happened.
The Manchester Evening News namechecks Wham!, Chic and the B-52’s in their review. Knowing that the B-52’s were releasing some new material, I assumed that this was it.
Fascination is…
Let’s be honest with each other, readers. It’s just a bloody good, upbeat, happy song. There’s no point in trying to intellectualise it or pontificate. Alphabeat are making great pop music. Instant classic. Thumbs up. ‘Nuff said.
