It’s a known fact that rock bands love to cover Michael Jackson songs, which is why we’re not surprised to learn the mascara-loving members of Fall Out Boy are covering Jackson’s classic, Beat It.
On this track, they’ve teamed up with celebrity boyfriend-for-hire/guitarist John Mayer (come on, you’ve never heard his music either, have you?) for quite a stormin’ rendition of an awesome song.

So, Gabriella Cilmi is the latest in a long line of female artists seemingly exploiting the old jazz/blues/soul genres. Sweet About Me is reminiscent of Norah Jones and Katie Melua at their absolute best, cool and subtly flirtatious (well, Melua in that respect).
PopJustice wittily remarked that Sweet About me could become #1 by Christmas, noting that the single has had a slow burn effect, gradually climbing into the top ten after initially entering the charts at a very low position.

Pendulum return with Propane Nightmares, the second single from their In Silico album.
Fully justifying all the hype, the Aussie drum n bass masters have created an epic song that - for our money - fuses their penchant for dance and rock music beautifully. Not everyone agrees with us though - Simon Catling goes to town in an open letter to Pendulum:

Panic release their second single from Pretty.Odd, That Green Gentleman. Oh, and it’s the song that features the album title in the lyrics - we love spotting those ones!
The surrealism of previous Panic At The Disco songs remains, but this acoustic tune is far more mainstream than we’ve seen the band venture to date.

We’ve always been right behind The Zutons. Their first album was a masterpiece of riff-laden retro rock, and their second spawned one of the biggest hits of this decade.
However, we’re left slightly disappointed by Always Right Behind You, a slip into glam-era choruses that leaves us wondering where exactly the stormin’ return of Dave McCabe and the gang went to.

It’s about time we talked about Usher’s latest single, Love In This Club. Long terms readers of this blog will know my thoughts on Usher and how much I resent his existence in the pop charts.
However, no-one can deny the greatness of this track. Not only is this a great track, I’m going as far as to call it an epic track, and you don’t get many of those in R&B these days.

Anyway, wasn’t it The Beautiful South who started this trend of writing songs about writing songs? Jennifer, Alison, Phillipa, Sue…

R.E.M. release the second single from their Accelerate album, Hollow Man on 2 June 2008. In keeping with the R.E.M. renaissance vibe, Hollow Man is a very straightforward, immediate tune.
As Eric Zimmermann writes:
I think it speaks of being Middle Aged. I think that we all look at ourselves in the mirror sometimes and wonder just if our lives are what we expected when we were 18.

Australian drum and bass duo Pendulum rocked the Radio One Big Weekend this year, and they’ve just released In Silico, their new album. And since it’s been a while since we’ve done an album review round-up, let’s have a look across the Internet to see what other bloggers are saying about In Silico.

These Ting Tings, and their stripped down musical stylings. First it was the very lo-fi Great DJ, which I wasn’t impressed with. That’s Not My Name, by comparison is a major improvement.
The whole song revolves around a repetitive Hey Mickey style drumbeat, which is the only instrumentation at the beginning, gradually joined by guitars and bass and other sound effects until the whole thing builds into a raucous noisy crescendo.
