Dizzee Rascal – Flex – Single Review

dizzee-rascal-flex

We don’t have too many odes to butt shaking in the UK, do we? Well, thanks to Dizzee, now we do.

There’s certainly nothing refined about Mr. Rascal’s rhymes on Flex. An American hip-hop artist would tend toward smoother, grinding beats, but Flex is ridiculously up-tempo, so the video doesn’t lend itself to slow gyrations. Therefore the girls in the video are shaking their asses like their lives depended on it!

Single Review: Kelly Clarkson – Don’t Waste Your Time

Kelly Clarkson - Dont Waste Your Time

Ms Clarkson pulls out all the stops in the video for her new single, Don’t Waste Your Time. Taking the role of a rockin’ Sleeping Beauty, walled into a fantasy castle surrounded by thorns, our Kelly belts out another of her pounding femme-rock anthems.

The problem when Kelly goes all rawk like this is that she’s just too damned chirpy. I don’t feel her angst. Drop the act, Clarkson, we all know you’re a wee cutie…

Jamie Scott & The Town Cover Bleeding Love

If you’ve ever wondered what Leona LewisBleeding Love would sound like sung by James Blunt, then check out this video. The band is called Jamie Scott And The Town. They’re filmed doing an impromptu version of Bleeding Love in what we like to call ‘the acoustic style’.

It’s nice to hear a different take on a popular song, though in some respects it becomes a bit ‘everyballad’. Until the end that is, when they start doing the ‘bum-bum-bums’ and lose it to a fit of the giggles!

Nelly Furtado – Do It

Nelly Furtado - Do It

By my count, Do It is the fifth single from Nelly Furtado’s Loose album. We’re assuming it’s going to be the last until she releases her next album.

However, when you remember that this awesome run of singles started with sexed-up songs like Promiscuous and Maneater, Do It seems like flimsy pop fare by comparison.

Girls Aloud – Call The Shots

girls-aloud-call-the-shots

Say what you like about them, but Girls Aloud have consistently released good pop music since they graduated from Popstars: The Rivals all those years ago. Surfing through the music channels, there always seems to be a best of Girls Aloud programme running.

Call The Shots is the latest single from the girls, and once again it’s a belter.

Foo Fighters – Long Road To Ruin

foo-fighters-long-road-to-ruin

Porn star ‘tache? Check. Bad wigs? Preposterous sets? Yes, the funny side of Foo Fighters has returned. The video for Long Road To Ruin is almost the natural successor to Learn To Fly.

Grohl and the boys play a bunch of soap opera actors. Grohl’s overemotional character plays a doctor until a number of on-set bust-ups result in him leaving, forming a band and becoming successful.

Although it’s not quite as remarkable as The Pretender, Long Road is still an awesome track. Check it out:

Arctic Monkeys – Teddy Picker

Arctic-Monkeys-Teddy-Picker

Just when you think the Arctic Monkeys have finally outstayed their welcome, they come along with a tune like Teddy Picker.

I caught this on the radio during the week and loved it just for that brilliant riff that runs through the song. The Arctic Monkeys do stripped-down like it’s an art form.

The accents are slightly like listening to the cast of Emmerdale, but that’s understandable, right?

Maroon 5 – Won’t Go Home Without You

Maroon 5 - Won't Go Home Without You

Let’s get this out of the way at the start: Adam Levine’s vocals on Won’t Go Home Without You bear more than a passing resemblance to Phil Collins. And the bassline bears a similarity to Every Breath You Take by The Police.

OK, on the chorus Adam gets a little bit high pitched, but you could totally see Phil Collins performing this song, couldn’t you?

Hard-Fi – Can’t Get Along (Without You)

hard-fi-can't-get-along

We’re still impressed with Hard-Fi’s second album offerings here at Unreality Music. Can’t Get Along (Without You) is the second single from the Once Upon A Time In West album.

Despite the song being written when Richard Archer was in a previous band (Contempo), Can’t Get Along fits very well with previous single Suburban Knights.

Kanye West ft T-Pain – Good Life

kanye-west-good-life

Earlier this week, Kanye West released the second single from his Graduation album, Good Life.

What can we say? West is one of those rappers who always gets it right. Good Life shows that while he can rap along with the best of them, Kanye also has an ear for a good tune, mixing in parts of Michael Jackson’s Pretty Young Thing.
