They weren't the iconic act that they imagined - very much a fluke girl group that belong in music history. For me, the Spice Girls have damaged their legacy (if we can call it that) by briefly reforming. I think it was clear that the reformation was purely for profit than for any fans, and the fans didn't like that idea.
