Say what? Luke Pritchard moans about the state of Indie scene
Luke Pritchard, the frontman for the Kooks has been gurning to the Daily Star about the state of the Indie music scene. He claims bands like The Pigeon Detectives have ruined it by diluting the ‘movement’.
When we first came out it was a cool time, with the Kaisers, Arctics and Bloc Party on the same circuit. I don’t think many people would place us with those acts, but at the time I really felt part of that whole movement.”
It’s funny what’s followed. Bands like The Pigeon Detectives took what was there and slightly diluted it.
You’re right, Luke, the Kooks aren’t fit to be mentioned in the same sentence as the Kaiser Chiefs or the Arctic Monkeys! If anything, we’d class the Kooks in the same category of bland Indie bleh as The Pigeon Detectives.
In any musical movement, you get the trailblazers, the bands that write the anthems and set the scene. With the recent British Indie scene, the Kaisers and Arctics came along and innovated, then A&R departments went nuts signing inferior copycat acts. Let’s not even start talking about the irony that most popular Indie acts these days are signed to major labels!
We’re not disagreeing with Pritchard on anything he’s said, but from our point of view, the Kooks are a part of the problem. Forgettable Indie tunes sung through thick, almost-pretend regional accents. Forgettable bands that have no real identity and all blur into one.
Opinions, anyone?

please list the musical innovations of the Kaiser Chiefs, thank you. Then the Arctic Monkeys if you wish, but primarily I’m interested in the genius of Ricky Wilson.

Agreed. But like Ally said, what’s so great about the Kaiser Chiefs? The Arctic Monkeys?… The Arctic Monkeys?? Are these the best bands you can name? If you ask me, they’re all lame and barely represent the “indie scene.” British Invasion wannabes with the same tired Brit-Rock formula, sure, but that just proves that none of these bands that you’ve listed are special.
I know it’s Pritchard’s dream to be an indie king warrior, but he needs to wake up and realize that the term “indie” derives from the word independent, i.e. independent label. Not Virgin. Not Universal. And while The Arctic Monkeys can fall into this indie category, that doesn’t mean that they don’t suck.
Come on, people.
That’s a valid point. I guess what I was trying to say was that they reinvigorated the scene rather than innovated musically.
whats the problem with what luke is saying?
The kooks have an amazing indie vibe …
while some bands dont in my opinion .
