Sandi Thom: New album and nothing to say

You’d never know Internet music phenom, Sandi Thom, was about to release a new album, would you? Over the last few weeks, there’s been a trickle of pathetic news stories about what a rocker she is and how ‘wasted’ she’s been since she became famous.
Blah blah blah.
I’ve made no secret of it before, but I hate it when musicians resort to making dumb statements to stay in the public eye. Especially when they have something to sell.
Sandi obviously can’t just come out and say, “I’ve got a new album coming out.” That’s too bloody direct, isn’t it? So, we’ve got to listen to some twee nonsense about how she “partied too hard”. I don’t get it. Am I supposed to feel sorry for her because she had a few hangovers? Should I offer her advice on staying sober?
I’ll tell you what would be newsworthy Sandi. Tell me how you’re fresh and relevant now that your self-publishing is old news? Tell me how you plan to follow up your one hit single and mediocre second single? Tell me why I should be listening to your music.
Because, frankly, if you’re resorting to ‘party animal’ stories at this stage of your career, you’ll be pulling Jordan-style nipple-slips at the album release. “Oops, damn this low-cut top. Did you get a good shot, Mr Paparazzi?”
Rant over. I await your new songs with baited breath.

Never a more prophetic word spoken. The single and album dissapeared instantly and she has now become a proffesional Scot, Hanging out any and everywhere that Alex Salmond the Scot first minister askes her to. and playing up her Scottish heritage while living as far away from it as she can. She now tours the small halls and backwaters of Scotland and still gushes the same clap trap she did when she first attempted to convince the world she had a talent.
Wow, thanks for reminding me about this post Brian: I’d totally forgotten about Sandi Thom, and perhaps now the rest of the planet has too!
It’s a shame really – I love hearing a good story of how someone can rise to the top without record company cronyism, but once she got there I always feared she’d lose her relevance.
It’s one thing to be a scrappy independent artist taking on the industry, but once you’re part of the industry you lose that unique selling point.
I honestly get a little tired of hearing people ragging on people who sign to record companies because the are no longer “relevant” or “with it”. Like it or not people offer you record deals if they think they can make money off you and typically that means your good. I agree Sandi has not done a straightforward job of promoting her album but it sits up there with my KT Tunstall albums which I roll out when I want to listen to something with a good beat and rhythm for working to. So I am duly flamed by so called “real music” fans who hate anything which was not burnt by a friend of the band and sold down a pub after a gig.
