Lovable 48-year-old scamp Richie Sambora went out for a drive in California’s Laguna Beach last night after having a skinful. He was spotted driving erratically in his little Hummer and pulled over.

Naturally, he failed the usual drunk driving tests and spent a fair bit of time down the cop shop explaining himself. In a more serious turn, it seems his daughter was in the car at the time with another child and an adult. TMZ are suggesting that he may face child endangerment charges.

Why am I mentioning this here? Well, Richie was one of my guitar heroes as a kid. Yeah, it was never cool to like Bon Jovi, but I liked his style on guitar and the flamboyant stage outfits he used to wear. I always got the impression that he had an edgier side to his personality, and it’s sad to see it come out in stories like this.

I suggested on our forum that maybe Richie’s problems are a comedown from the heady days of Bon Jovi’s international stardom. I don’t know if that’s really what’s behind this, or if there are other problems. Maybe I’m projecting my feelings about Bon Jovi onto him here, but I do think that when you’ve been used to rocking big stadiums across the globe, the slow transformation of Bon Jovi into a lame country act may be taking it’s toll.

Anybody else have any thoughts or insight into Richie’s drinking problems?
