The musical theme this week seems to be the return of heavy hitting bands from the 90’s. Ocean Colour Scene are back on the … um … scene with a new single, I Told You So.
What can I say about this track?
On the positive side, it’s a bright, upbeat, summery track. It’s got a great big-bass sound and retro-pop guitar lines courtesy of Fanny Steve Craddock. The chorus is memorable and uncomplicated. All in all, it’s a classic radio-friendly track.
On the negative side, it’s terribly derivative of 60’s pop fare, like the love child of The Beatles and a few other bands from that era. There’s nothing original here, is what I’m saying.
Having listened to tracks by Ash, Travis and now Ocean Colour Scene this week, I can’t help but wonder if there’s support out there for so many resurgent bands from the 90’s. Is there a reason that they’re all coming out of the woodwork now?
Whatever, it’ll be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks and see how their fortunes fare in the charts….

That’s not the point I was making. Many of the bands I mentioned have been out of the limelight and absent from the pop charts for a number of years, Ocean Colour Scene included.
