Newton Faulkner – Dream Catch Me
The blurb on Faulkner’s website would lead you to believe that his musical style is breaking major new ground. “What?s that sound?”, they gush, “It?s acoustic guitar like we?ve never heard it before. It?s things done to six strings that will boggle the ears and eyes.”
They witter on about Faulkner’s ‘tapping’ style like Eddie Van Halen didn’t popularize that nearly 30 years ago. But then musician websites are notoriously full of bullshit like that.
Let me cut to the chase with this, Simon Cowell style. Newton Faulkner has a very distinctive look with the dreadlocks and the beard. Dream Catch Me does nothing to showcase any virtuoso guitar talents he may have, but it’s a passable acoustic singer/songwriter kind of track.
He’s got the gravelly voice of someone who’s paid his dues on the pub and club circuit. However, if I blindfolded you, this song wouldn’t distinguish Newton Faulkner from any other singer/songwriter on any open mic night up and down the country. Mediocre.
