Misery-rockers Coldplay are to release their new single Violet Hill as a free download which will be available from their website from 12:15pm today. Presumably the timing is to coincide with the radio premiere of the song on Jo Whiley’s radio show this morning.
Jo’s show runs until 12:45, so I’d imagine you can expect to hear Violet Hill some time around 12:00. Maybe just listen to the whole show to be sure, though - I don’t want you blaming me if you miss it!
Now, the track is only available online for the next week, but it’ll be interesting to see what direction Coldplay have taken with their new music, since there’s been so much hype about it.
In addition to the free track, they’re also giving it away free on the cover of NME in vinyl format. Presumably to counter the culture shock of releasing a song digitally.
They’re also planning to do two free concerts - one in London at Brixton Academy and the other at New York’s Madison Square Gardens. So, all in all, a bit of a triumph for the fans, although they probably deserve it after waiting 3 years for a new album.
It’s only fair to give Coldplay a nod of respect for trying something different with this release. Nice to see them going the ‘free music’ path, and I’m sure it’ll reap huge rewards for them later.
