Fair play to Chris Brown. As I mentioned in my chart rundown, I had Chris written off as a 2nd rate Usher wannabe.
With You is Chris’ most memorable single to date, with a nice fusion of R&B and acoustic guitar that brings back memories of the Nelly/Tim McGraw collaboration, Over And Over Again - smooth verses with a strong hook in the chorus.
You won’t be surprised to learn that Stardust are behind this track - the same crew who produced Beyonce’s Irreplacable and Rihanna’s Hate That I Love You. You can see a thread here in that all these songs have a prominent acoustic line running through them. Is this the next phase in R&B music?
Regardless of trends, Brown manages to pull With You off with a degree of soul - something you couldn’t accuse professional narcissist Usher of. The thing is, is this a vindication of Chris Brown’s talents or is it a vindication of the Stardust team?
Whatever, let’s not overthink the thing. With You is a fantastic pop/R&B track, and we can’t help hoping that we’ll be hearing more from Chris soon. His duet with Jordin Sparks is doing very well Stateside right now as well, which suggests his star is rising.
