Though life after Sugababes hasn’t exactly been a bed of roses for Siobhan Donaghy, things are looking good for the other ex-Sugababe, Mutya Buena.
While we were expecting her to sink without trace after her departure from Sugababes, she’s come back strong recently with various high-profile collaborations and the single Real Girl from the album of the same name.
Most notably, Real Girl makes heavy use of the strings sample from Lenny Kravitz’s It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over. We’ve got to applaud the girl for re-using such a catchy and recognizable melody - that takes both guts and guile!
The track (and accompanying video) come across as fairly autobiographical, even reminiscent of her singing on the Sugababes single Ugly. It’s this type of writing that makes Mutya a memorable artist. As a female artist, this approach is more honest than, say, Beyonce’s bling-bling girls-are-great overconfident swagger.
And with the Sugababes going through a quiet period, it’ll be interesting to see how their fortunes compare over time, won’t it?
