Mutya Buena – B-Boy Baby – Single Review

B-Boy Baby is truly a ‘what the hell?’ moment in the solo career of Ms Mutya Buena. As in what the hell were you thinking???

The hook for B-Boy Baby is lifted off the classic Ronettes track, Be My Baby. Unlike Sean Kingston, who managed to rip off Stand By Me to some degree of success, Mutya fouls it up royally by jumping between hip-hop and soul sounds.

The hip-hop bits are quite funky on their own, but the harmonies on the chorus are so bad as to make you wish your ears fell off. And I hear that Amy Winehouse is singing on that very same chorus. Talk about your kiss of death.

I have to totally agree with the DS review, which says:

…she loses that edge and knocks out a tune that’s merely “alright”. Frustratingly, she’s clearly got the voice and attitude to do so much more than this semi-tuneful and lazy re-working of the classic ‘Be My Baby’.

All in all, this is a big disappointment from Mutya, especially considering how well her collaboration with Groove Armada did earlier this year.
