I’ve just learned that Mitch Mitchell, the last remaining member of the Jimi Hendrix Experience has died.

He was taking a break following the Experience Hendrix tour, and was found dead in his hotel room yesterday morning. The coroner’s office say it is likely that he died of natural causes.

Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix said: “We’re all devastated to hear of Mitch’s passing. He was a wonderful man, a brilliant musician and a true friend. His role in shaping the sound of the Jimi Hendrix Experience cannot be underestimated.”

There’s a very thorough biography of Mitch on The Independent website which details his early beginnings as a child actor, through to his days as a session drummer and beyond.

I’ve loved the Jimi Hendrix Experience all my life, so it’s sad to hear this news. The last member of this wonderful band has passed into legend, and fittingly at the end of a tour which celebrated the band he was best known for his role in.
