MGMT - Time To Pretend
Hi! Thanks for visiting Unreality Music! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed for regular updates.
Yes, MGMT are one of those bands on the big hype list for 2008. So my bullshit radar is off the map even before I’ve started.
Things don’t start well when the song begins with some weird-ass sound effects. Then we have possibly the lowest-budget music video in decades. I can’t even begin to describe the horror of those special effects!
Yet Time To Pretend soon bathes your ears in delicious washes of electronic fuzz and trippy vocals to match the psychedelic video.
And it’s one of those rare songs where the lyrics stand out too. It’s a pretty stark picture of celebrity life, but done in the context of leaving behind home and childhood and normal things for a life of pretence. They talk about it as if it’s all inevitable, like the rough side of fame is something they have to live through:
There’s really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we’ll get a divorce
We’ll find some more models, everything must run it’s course.
Of all the bands listed in the ‘Sound Of 2008′ poll, MGMT might be one of the first that actually seem to be worth the hype. Check out their performance of Time To Pretend on the David Letterman Show:
Time To Pretend is the debut single from MGMT’s first album Oracular Spectacular, and it’s released on 3 March 2008.

Hmm, who wrote this article must be a some kind of shallow backstreet boys fan.
I find this track very original and creative. The synthesizer give the track a great boost. Yes this is High quality psychedelic rock. Very promising. btw; you shouldt show this live-version. The music clip with the recorded version is much better. cheers, suck my balls

Yeah Tom, that’s me - shallow and loving shit pop music. I actually enjoyed this track, and it bodes well for MGMT, so I don’t see exactly where you’re disagreeing with me.

I like this single it has a really good catchy sound to it in my opinion and the rest of the album is pretty good aswell but some of it is quite different to this song though I’m still not sure what song I like the most.
