Maximo Park – Girls Who Play Guitars
Maximo Park seem to be having a great run of singles at the moment. They also seem to be the darlings of Radio 1, which never seems to hurt sales of their singles.
Girls Who Play Guitars is yet another song in the band’s winning streak. It’s an uptempo number with tight, punchy guitar and drums that punctuate the intro and verses. The choruses are relentless, the lyrics being beat into your head by a pounding snare drum.
However, from what I read over on Singles Jukebox earlier, this isn’t even close to being Maximo Park’s best material:
This and ?Books From Boxes? aren?t bad songs, but they?re also not highlights, and definitely not up to the level of ?Our Velocity.? The weirdly soaring keyboards on the bridge are a nice touch, but they can (and have) done so much better.
My opinion? I can’t agree with the Jukebox guys. I think it’s a fantastic tune, maybe not the best I’ve heard from Maximo Park, but strong enough for a single and catchy enough to sell. However, I’d be interested in getting my hands on the album to see if the non-singles really are better.
