Mark Ronson – Just – Review

mark-ronson-just

Just is Mark Ronson’s fourth single from his Version album, and if anything it’s proof that this guy has that jazzy funk style licked. If you look back over Stop Me, Oh My God and Valerie, you can see just how stylishly consistent this guy is.

And if you’re not aware, Just was the catalyst for the whole Version album. It’s a cover of a Radiohead song that Ronson did for a Radiohead tribute album a couple of years ago. The vocalist joining Mark on the song is Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet.

Some critics are getting a little tired of the Ronson formula, and of course there are a few Radiohead supporters who are a bit protective of the band’s work.

My opinion? It’s nice to hear Ronson performing with a lesser known voice. Valerie’s hitting overkill point about now, and Winehouse’s honking vocal starting to grate just a little.

Just is a nice contrast, a funky, brassy tune, and Greenwald’s performance is a perfect match for Ronson’s groove. Not that groove you animals, settle down! On the flip side, I can’t help but wonder if Ronson’s formula – which he’s flogged pretty hard on this album and on Amy Winehouse’s – isn’t going to wear a bit thin in the near future.
