Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love

Bleeding Love is the single everyone’s talking about this week, as Leona Lewis releases her first ‘proper’ single since winning X Factor 2006.
When we first heard the song about a month ago, it was admittedly hard to like. The style is very cutting edge R&B with stark, distorted drums and a simple organ accompanying the tune for most of the song.
Obviously, the intention is to draw attention to Leona’s voice – she’s being sold as the NBD. That’s Next Big Diva to you, folks. Anyway, what Bleeding Love demonstrates is that Leona’s voice can stand on its own.
She doesn’t overplay it. Mariah would have warbled this to death when she was at the top of her game. Leona – always tasteful by comparison – shows off the full extent of her range, while still allowing the melody to carry through.
It’s clear that Simon Cowell and Clive Davis are investing heavily in Lewis and the hype that was built up last year. They’ve wisely kept Leona from the public eye and kept a steady level of speculation about her future. They’ve given her the cream of songwriting and production talent to collaborate with.
In a world that is drowning in identikit indie bands, perhaps having a diva on the scene will spice things up a bit.
Bleeding Love is the first single from Leona’s debut album Spirit which is released on 12 November.

Leona definitely has a stella voice. I watched the X Factor series last year and it was refreshing to see someone like her win. Stunningly beautiful but wonderfully modest with it. I think the UK has been waiting for a diva like Leona for a long while now. I hope she does have a good and long lasting career. Sometimes these “talent” shows can find true talent. To imagine that Leona still could have been a receptionist in a car dealership with the general public never hearing her wonderful voice seems criminal. Good luck for the future Leona, I hope you’ll go far.
