KT Tunstall - Hold On - Single Review
Hold On starts off in a similar way to Tunstall’s previous hit Black Horse Under Cherry Tree - all strumming guitars and reverb-drenched vocals. Tunstall has quite an apocalyptic quality when she sings, and you sometimes get the feeling of foreboding that you might get from a Mississippi blues singer.
Before long though, the song becomes much more upbeat, with a hand-clap backing more prominent than any drums I can hear on the track.
As the first single from Tunstall’s second album, Hold On doesn’t make much of a change in her songwriting or delivery. Well, it may just be a little more ‘pop’ around the chorus. I just can’t help thinking that this is completely at odds with what’s in the charts today. Don’t expect the same glorious reception as we had for her a couple of years ago. I think the charts have moved on.
Hold On: The Video
Yikes! If you like the song, you’ll probably hate the video. Stylistically all over the place, it’s a video that features our heroine in more costume changes than a Beyonce Knowles gig and doing heinous dance sequences. I know it’s supposed to be tongue in cheek, but it’s not funny and she can’t carry it off.
I guess I’m saying the video is a train wreck.
