Kings Of Leon – Use Somebody – Single Review

The follow-up single to Kings Of Leon’s massive hit Sex On Fire will be Use Somebody.

There’s an interesting discussion about this single on Stereogum, with many people calling it a sellout and a disaster for the band.

It’s true, this is a huge stadium-rock style anthem, a complete contrast to the smouldering, intimate vibe on Sex On Fire. And only Caleb Followil’s distinctive yelp puts the Kings Of Leon signature on this single.

Which isn’t to say it’s a bad song. But Subterranian call it a complete pooch screw, and long-time fans of the band are up in arms:

I can’t…. I just can’t. This video is terrible. Where did these guys go? I used to love these guys, and I still love the old version. This is alien takeover shit.

But isn’t this the trouble when a band who was the music industry’s best kept secret starts to make it big? They iron out the wrinkles that made them interesting in order to appeal to the mass market.

To a Kings newbie like myself, I can’t claim familiarity with their back catalogue, Use Somebody is a passable song. Probably the best word for it is ‘bland’. There isn’t really a memorable hook, and it’s not until the guitar solo kicks in that there’s anything worth remembering this song for.

And a question for long-time fans of the band: can you recommend the definitive Kings Of Leon songs/albums that someone new to the band should pick up?

Definitive KOL albums? Check out their Because of the Times album (”Knocked Up” is a bad ass song) . Plus more great music on their others.

  2. Thanks Greg – I picked up Because Of The Times recently. Let’s put it this way, I’m suitably awestruck – it’s been years since I’ve connected with an album in this way. Next stop? The earlier records…

No problem G. KOL has been under the American mainstream radar for a while. Their earlier records are definitely worth exploring. Enjoy.
