Kate Nash – Foundations

Initial thoughts on hearing Kate Nash’s Foundations: can the market bear another Lily Allen type act?

Nash ticks all those Lily Allen hallmarks: Gobby, witty Cockney girl, full of attitude, has a sort of singing/talking thing going on. Oh yeah, giving loads of verbal abuse to some poor (fictional?) bloke.

Foundations is a clever, well-written tune. Like little Miss Allen, Kate Nash has a fantastic narrative style, carrying her story through the song. The lyrics are sharp, too:

You say I must eat so many lemons
’cause I am so bitter
I said I’d rather be with your friends mate
’cause they are much fitter

There’s a great accompanying video as well – it gives a great sense of a disjointed relationship and the little bits of animation are excellent.

The jury’s still out on whether Kate can prove to be different enough to survive in the pop charts. At the moment the single’s at #2, but how long it stays there will be interesting…

Update: I caught Kate Nash performing this song on The Friday Night Project last night, and she was really nervous. You could really hear her voice wavering as she sang. Felt quite sorry for her actually….
