Is Kylie The Latest EMI Casualty?

Despite lots of television coverage recently with her own one-off show and a spot on Doctor Who, Kylie’s latest album, X, isn’t setting the music world on fire.

Apparently the pocket-sized Aussie is disappointed at the poor album sales and is pointing her finger at EMI. Although the album was released in late November, X has only sold 315,000 copies to date.

Kylie joins a growing line of artists who are displeased with EMI since the takeover of Guy Hands and his Terra Firma company. On the other hand, it seems like Terra Firma believe the artist roster at EMI has more than a little dead weight.

Radiohead and EMI recently had a public war of words over the failed renegotiation of their recording contract. Apparently Robbie Williams and Coldplay are other EMI acts who are unhappy with the current situation.

The big question is: if EMI trim the fat off their label, are they planning to launch other world class acts to replace the likes of Radiohead? Or do they want to get rid of the expensive acts and simply replace them with salaried pop puppets? Watch this space.

  1. Well, I can tell you there has been absolutely no marketing towards the ”X” here in the States. In fact, I purchased the album as a rather pricey import this past weekend. Honestly, I think it’s a great pop album — one of her best.

I know she’s huge in Europe so I’d have to imagine lulled album sales aren’t for lack of interest. It has to be lack of promotion.

  2. Thanks Social Citizen - Kylie did a one-off show before Christmas on one of our biggest channels which should have propelled the album much further - not many artists get that kind of exposure.

It might have had something to do with her strange reinterpretation of her old hits. I don’t know.

Also, her stint on Doctor Who should have helped matters. Personally, I feel she was slightly off the mark with this one.

I think that the fact that her new album bombed is because people are becoming less gullible. Kylie gives nothing as someone else does everything else for her so why should she expect every album to be a success? You don’t automatically win the right to sell well just because you sang on 12 or so tracks.
