Ike Turner died today at his home near San Diego, California. He was 76 years old, but no word has been released yet as to the cause of death.

Most news sources are being careful to remember Ike as a dedicated musician and a legend in his own right. However, you and I best know him for his reputation as a wife beater, as immortalised in the Tina Turner biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It.

For me, I can imagine a generation of music lovers who appreciate Ike Turner for his contribution to music. There will be others who only know him as the poster boy for domestic abuse.

Astonishingly, it’s believed Turner was married a total of 14 times, although only 4 of those marriages are verifiable (well, we’ll find out if anyone decides to contest his will!).

Possibly the most poignant quote today was from Paul Gambaccini, who said:

“To critics he will be known as a great founder, unfortunately to the general public he will always be known as a brutal man,”

Turner will best be remembered (among music fans) for his contribution to rock n roll music and what is generally regarded to be the first rock n roll song, Rocket ‘88.
