Gym Class Heroes - Cupid’s Chokehold - Single Review

Hi! Thanks for visiting Unreality Music! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed for regular updates.

The jury is out as to whether Cupid’s Chokehold is a sampling of Supertramp’s Breakfast In America or if it’s a remake of the original. Without getting into the politics of cover versions, let’s just call it a reinterpretation for the sake of this review!

Although Gym Class Heroes have been about for a while now (almost a decade), this is their first proper showing in the UK pop charts. It’s a fantastic song too, but I’m not sure whether the credit belongs to Gym Class Heroes or to Supertramp. My feeling is about 75% of the track’s success is down to the bits Supertramp wrote.

That’s not to say the rapping by Travis McCoy is a complete failure. In fact, coupled with the video, the lyrics to Cupid’s Chokehold come across as warm and humourous. Travis’ character in the video meets a succession of hot women, but by the end of each verse the relationship has fizzled out. I had to laugh at the lyric “she even cooks me pancakes, and Alka Seltzer when my tummy aches” - that’s your mother, dude!

I will even overlook the use of irritating dancing cherubs in the video, such is my liking of this song!

Great band, I’m going to be watching out for their new stuff. Big thumbs up for this tune!

I agree - I didn’t hear the original song, but if that’s Supertramp I might check out their back catalogue!
