Fall Out Boy ft John Mayer - Beat It - Single Review
Hi! Thanks for visiting Unreality Music! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed for regular updates.

It’s a known fact that rock bands love to cover Michael Jackson songs, which is why we’re not surprised to learn the mascara-loving members of Fall Out Boy are covering Jackson’s classic, Beat It.
On this track, they’ve teamed up with celebrity boyfriend-for-hire/guitarist John Mayer (come on, you’ve never heard his music either, have you?) for quite a stormin’ rendition of an awesome song.
What struck us on watching the Beat It video was how much FOB are morphing into some kind of glam rock band. OK, so they’ve been doing the eyeliner bit for ages, but are they ready to commit to feather boas and bandanas ;)
As cover versions go, Fall Out Boy manage a fairly faithful copy of the original, albeit with crunchier guitars and Patrick Stump sounding a little bit strained on vocals. Oh, and no Eddie Van Halen. Mayer’s solo has some elements of brilliance, but we’ll always expect those finger-tapping, whammy-bar diving moves that graced the original Beat It…

I never see the point in coverring a song and changing very little of it. I don’t see the point of Fallout Boy covering this song. I like some of FOB’s other stuff, but you can’t cover an MJ classic as faithfully as possible because the original will still shat on it. FOB should have change the arrangement, or add something to it other than standard punk distortion.

“On this track, they’ve teamed up with celebrity boyfriend-for-hire/guitarist John Mayer (come on, you’ve never heard his music either, have you?)” Whaaat..??? Crazy talk… Maybe you should start to listen to his music… But, I agree the fact that the solo could be much better.

Well. What can I say. Fall Out Boy have murdered a classic. It’s essentially a sloppier, slightly heavier version of the MJ classic with MJ’s seamless voice replaced by the annoying, whiny warblings of Stump. It’s gone from being cool to just depressing. Unbearable.

Don’t get upset with Fall Out Boy for covering this song, the simple fact is that they took a pop song, and converted it to a punk rock style. If you are an MJ fan you should be honored that other bands want to cover his songs, it’s no doubt that MJ is a pop legend and his music is amazing. As a musician I know that MJ’s songs are fun to do a “rock” cover of, my band has a 16bit recording of Dirty Diana, and it’s pretty awesome. I’m not a FOB fan, but I believe that they did a great job covering this song.
