Welcome back for another run down of the UK’s top ten! In this edition, I’m going to moan about how hard it is to write the chart run-down when the tunes stay the same each week.
Nickelback, Rihanna and Kelly Rowland have been hanging around the chart for weeks and weeks, and I have officially run out of things to say about these singles. So, spare me the mental block and fill in your own thoughts in the comments, eh?

Ouch. Of the two young ladies tipped for big things in 2008, Adele spent the last few weeks being denied her #1 by Basshunter. Then, just when their iron grip of that position slips, in nips Duffy and takes it effortlessly. That’s got to be annoying!
Not as annoying as that Nickelback single is becoming. Finally managed to eclipse How You Remind Me with a piece of novelty rock? Well done lads. Anyway, without further ado folks, here’s the UK Top 10 for the week.

In this weeks edition of the charts, Basshunter refuse to give up their No 1 slot. The industry must’ve forgot to tell them Adele was scheduled for that position. Oops!
In other news, Nickelback stay in the charts for a surprisingly long time. David Jordan is a new and very welcome addition to the chart, and in what can only be described as an act of pop terrorism, people have bought enough Wet Wet Wet singles to allow them to chart. What is the world coming to? Answers on a postcard to the usual address please.

I must be in pissy form today, because just about every song on the top ten this week annoys me on some level.
I’d been holding off on doing a review of Kanye West’s Homecoming single, because I thought it was quite a weak track. It scratched the top ten last week, but dropped out again pretty quickly. Maybe my first impression was right?

Here’s the top ten for the week beginning 20 January 2008. Basshunter still hold the coveted top spot, while hot tip for 2008, Adele is the highest new entry at number two.
The charts are fairly static beyond the top ten, proved by the fact that a lot of older singles have reentered such as With Every Heartbeat and Gimme More. I’m also a little disappointed that The Wombats didn’t make top ten with Moving To New York, one of my favourite songs at the moment.

Finally, Leon Jackson’s reign of terror atop the charts is over. And all it took was an obscure dance act, a crazed former teen starlet and four hairy blokes who think they’re rock stars.
- Basshunter - Now You’re Gone: Seems to have come out of nowhere but is now dominating the top ten as well as all the music video channels.
- Britney Spears - Piece Of Me: Britney’s right to reply, or a self-indulgent rant about her reputation as a drugged out tabloid darling?
- Soulja Boy Tellem - Crank That: Doesn’t look like this one’s going to take Number 1, despite having great success stateside. At this point we’re all wondering if this is a one-hit wonder. What do you think?
- Nickelback - Rockstar: Chad Kroeger’s star-packed video and throaty vocals make Rockstar a sing-along classic. Available at a Karaoke night near you any day now.
- Leon Jackson - When You Believe: Ah, the X-Effect is starting to fade. Expect this to drop out of the charts like a rather large stone. Is that a fat lady singing?
- Rihanna - Don’t Stop The Music: Pumping club track from the delicious Rihanna. Not the most original song in the world, but she bring a touch of cool to it.
- Lupe Fiasco ft Matthew Santos - Superstar: Tapping into the Kanye West style, I knew this was going to be a big hit when I first heard it. Almost too similar to Mr West, maybe it’s evidence of West’s influence in hip-hop that artists like Lupe are emulating his sound and style.
- Timbaland ft OneRepublic - Apologize: Bleeding Love dropped out of the top ten this week, but Apologize is holding on. Judging by past form of both Timbaland and Ryan Tedder, it’s got a couple of weeks left yet.
- Take That - Rule The World: The almighty Take That. After the weak-ass Beatles-by-numbers of Shine, I was glad to see this tune doing so well. Now I’m looking forward to their next release.
- Scouting For Girls - Elvis Ain’t Dead: A dumb repeat of their first single. Even sadder that the general public is dumb enough to lap up this one-trick band and buy the same record twice. Boring.
There’s been plenty of churn in the top ten this week. Mark Ronson’s Valerie has slipped off, as has Girls Aloud’s Call The Shots and Alicia Keys and T2/Jodie Aysha are also heading down the chart. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much rising to replace them…
Ooooohhh kaaaayyy! It’s the first official chart of 2008, and a numpty sits at the top, waiting to be toppled from his perch. Please, Gods of Music, grant me this one wish - make him disappear quickly and painlessly.
I didn’t write about the pop charts for a couple of weeks. Why? Because the top ten hasn’t changed much at all.
But don’t worry folks, there’s a spate of new releases in January that I’m counting to work like a laxative and create some movement in the top ten!

Ha ha, this is the week that Christmas songs started to infiltrate the pop charts. Thanks to the new download rules, people flocking to download Christmas classics are causing songs by The Pogues and Mariah Carey to re-enter the charts!
Still, Leona Lewis’ death grip on the number one position holds for yet another week. I’m finding myself wondering if she’ll hang on long enough to beat whoever wins X Factor this year!

Another week, another top 10. Well, except that this week’s top 10 is largely the same as last week’s!
- Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love: I’ve officially lost count - is it four or five weeks at number one? Either way, Leona’s mentor Simon Cowell is looking pretty smug at the moment. Give him his dues, he’s played a blinder with Leona Lewis.
- T2 ft Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken: I groovy bit of urban dance music - dare I resurrect the word ‘garage’? Cute, digitally enhanced stuttering vocal from Jodie Aysha.
- Take That - Rule The World: As I said last time, Gaz Barlow and his mates are superglued to the top five with possibly their best song in years. Hats off to Take That.
- Timbaland ft One Republic - Apologize: Sometimes I wonder if Timbaland is sat at home surrounded by his own CD singles, buying his own records repeatedly just to get them in the charts. This is not one of those times - Apologize is one of the best ballads to grace the charts this year.
- Mark Ronson ft Amy Winehouse - Valerie: It’s time to admit that - rather like Amy’s beehive - this track has seen better days. The shine is wearing off, and I’m itching to hear something new from Mark Ronson.
- Shayne Ward - Breathless: I make it my business never to listen to Shayne Ward tracks unless I’m tied to a table with barbed wire with a laser pointed at my testicles. Me: 1, Bond villians
- Alicia Keys - No One: Keys’ comeback song is an absolute belter (as is Alicia!) and it’s nice to see her so well received after a period of time out of the charts. By the way, this recently made number 1 in America.
- Kylie Minogue - 2 Hearts: I thought this might grow on me. I was wrong, so wrong. 2 Hearts is derivative dirge, undeserving of Kylie. I’ve seen a couple of her shows on TV recently, and she’s still not looking 100%. Is she pushing herself too hard after the cancer treatment?
- Girls Aloud - Call The Shots: I can’t remember not being excited about Girls Aloud hitting the charts with their excellent tunes, Nicola’s endearing awkwardness, Cheryl’s ridiculous eye-batting antics and marvelling at how Sarah Harding gets more hard-faced with each new video.
- Sugababes - About You Now: It’ll never be my favourite Sugababes track, but having listened to Freak Like Me recently and finding myself slightly bored, I can appreciate the need for the ‘babes to move on musically.
On another note, I saw that Led Zeppelin have entered the singles chart with Stairway To Heaven this week and last. This has been drastically under reported, considering that Zeppelin went to great pains never to release that track as a single. For it to chart on the strength of hype alone (and no video/airplay) just shows how important this band still is today.
Stairway is at No 39 this week, down two places from last week’s position. Well done the Zep!
Welcome to the 11 November UK top ten singles!
Not only did Leona Lewis hold on to the top spot this week, she has also sold more singles in the UK this year than any other artist. Not bad considering she only released one single!
Here’s the run-down of the top ten pop singles this week:
