The Kiss Of Dawn by HIM, Reviewed

kiss-of-dawn

Sometimes the image presented by a band on the covers of metal magazines just doesn’t reflect the music. If The Kiss Of Dawn is anything to go by, HIM are another of those misrepresented bands.

In fact, the video upholds gothic images of graveyards, gnarled trees and an omnipresent full moon. And during the verses, it all works well. But the chorus is so melodic and sugary, it almost crosses the line into a type of pop-rock affair. Read More »

A History Of Poison (In Albums)

Alongside Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, Poison were undoubtedly one of the biggest names in hard rock in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

Unbelievably, Poison are still together 21 years after their first album - Look What The Cat Dragged In - was released. Earlier this summer, Poison released their 9th album - Poison’d - featuring their favourite covers from their career. Being a fan of their earlier work, I decided to put together this history of the band told using their albums as milestones.

Linkin Park - Bleed It Out

Linkin Park - Bleed It Out

Well here we go for the hundredth time kids, another Linkin Park single, video and subsequent review. Bleed It Out - for the record - is probably my favourite song from the Minutes To Midnight album.

Reasons to love Bleed It Out are legion: it follows the winning Linkin Park formula, it’s one of the few songs on Minutes To Midnight to feature a rap by Mike Shinoda. Oh and it’s got expletives! Yay!

Apocalyptica ft Corey Taylor - I’m Not Jesus

Apocalyptica - I’m Not Jesus

Apocalyptica are a band best known for their string-based covers of Metallica songs. Frustrating for the band, as they’ve been around since 1996 and doing a variety of different things in the intervening years.

Ahead of the release of their latest album, Worlds Collide, they’re releasing the new single I’m Not Jesus, which features Corey Taylor of Slipknot.

Nickelback - Rockstar

Chad Kroeger and his Nickelback chums are experiencing a bit of a backlash at the moment. Apparently they’ve been rumbled as being both boring and generic.

Funnily enough, I was listening to their Silver Side Up album during the week and I couldn’t help thinking that they weren’t as clever as we all imagined when How You Remind Me came out.

Steven Adler Still Hoping For Guns N’ Roses Reunion

Guns-N-Roses-Poster I wonder what Steven Adler’s bandmates think of his constant assertions that he’d love to reunite the original Guns N’ Roses lineup.

Let’s face it, Adler’s Appetite would probably run out of steam pretty quickly, leaving the other members just an over-glorified tribute band. And I don’t understand where he’s getting the idea that the other Gunners are buying into the idea. None of them seem to have commented publicly so far.

Which - I think you’ll agree - leaves the most washed-up member of the classic Guns N’ Roses lineup craving a reunion. Hmmm. If you were Adler, would you rather be in a tribute band to GNR or be back in the drum stool behind your old compadres? Read More »

The Ultimate Linkin Park “Minutes To Midnight” Review Round-Up

One of the most hotly anticipated albums this year was Linkin Park’s latest, Minutes To Midnight. Tipped as a new direction for the band, there’s noticably less rapping from Shinoda. So, naturally, Chester Bennington features more prominently on this album.

Rather than doing a straight review, I’ve trawled the web to bring you some of the best reviews of the new album.

Are Metallica Boring?

I heard on the grapevine that Metallica are plotting a new album for sometime in 2008.

Big yawn. Didn’t Metallica play themselves out of musical relevance years ago? I haven’t bought a new Metallica album since Load, and I never properly warmed to that one. Then they took a little sabbatical to sue their fans for copyright infringement. That was clever. Even fans who hadn’t downloaded copies of their albums balked at the thought of being taken to the cleaners by Hetfield and Ulrich. Read More »
