Dizzee Rascal - Flex - Single Review

dizzee-rascal-flex

We don’t have too many odes to butt shaking in the UK, do we? Well, thanks to Dizzee, now we do.

There’s certainly nothing refined about Mr. Rascal’s rhymes on Flex. An American hip-hop artist would tend toward smoother, grinding beats, but Flex is ridiculously up-tempo, so the video doesn’t lend itself to slow gyrations. Therefore the girls in the video are shaking their asses like their lives depended on it!

Kanye West ft T-Pain - Good Life

kanye-west-good-life

Earlier this week, Kanye West released the second single from his Graduation album, Good Life.

What can we say? West is one of those rappers who always gets it right. Good Life shows that while he can rap along with the best of them, Kanye also has an ear for a good tune, mixing in parts of Michael Jackson’s Pretty Young Thing.

Review Round-Up: Timbaland - Shock Value

Despite spawning a number of massive singles, Timbaland’s Shock Value album hasn’t been a critical success. We’ve trawled the web for quality reviews of the album and that many music writers were left cold by the quality of the album.

Should Timbaland stay strictly backstage? Read on and find out.

Ice-T v Jay-Z - 99 Problems: Who’s Better?

It was well over a decade ago that I first heard 99 Problems by Ice-T. It was in my A Level Art class at school, and one of the guys let me have a listen. It was from Ice’s Home Invasion album, and he was suddenly popular with the metal crew in school because of his Body Count album. That’s what led a lot of us to rap music.

Anyway, fast forward a few years, and 99 Problems hits my stereo again, courtesy of Mr Jay-Z (the similarities in their rap names aren’t lost on me!). Where Ice-T had a real old-school vibe, Jay-Z’s version employs big drums and crunchy, distorted guitar goodness.

Jay-Z’s is also much safer than Ice-T’s. For my money, Ice’s version takes the gold medal for lewdness and sheer brilliance. Whose version do you prefer?

Timbaland ft One Republic - Apologize

Timbaland Apologize

I’ve been hearing Apologize all week on the radio, and it’s got to be the best track off Timbaland’s Shock Value album.

Apologize is the first slow song to be released from the album. It’s a remix of OneRepublic’s original version, retaining Ryan Tedder’s vocal. And in keeping with anything Timbaland does, it’s completely genre-busting, avoiding any hint of cliche at all.

Sorry Nas, You’re Not Calling That Album ‘Nigga’

The hot topic in rap this year has been the use of the word ‘Nigga’. After turning a blind eye to gangsta rappers using the word since, um, forever, the industry has suddenly decided to take offense. Is that a delayed reaction or what?

Onstage this week, the rapper Nas claimed that his next album will be called Nigga. From a marketing point of view, making such a controversial claim is bound to draw attention. Shame his record company didn’t agree, isn’t it?

Soulja Boy - Crank Dat

soulja-boy-tell-em

Here’s what’s currently ringing America’s bell folks: 17 year old DeAndre Ramone Way, otherwise known as Soulja Boy and his runaway hit Crank Dat.

All the buzz is focused around the rapper’s dancing style rather than the song itself. Is this guy damning himself to become the next Macarena?

50 Cent - Ayo Technology

50-cent-ayo-technology

It’s a well known fact that I got beef with 50 Cent, so I approach any single by the man with a healthy dose of skepticism.

And when the song in question starts with the man blathering about  being ’sumin’ special’ and ‘unforgettable’, the bullshit radar goes off the map.

Gwen Stefani - Now That You Got It

gwen-stefani-now-that-you-g

If you could draw a chart showing the quality of Gwen Stefani’s solo singles over time, it would start out pretty high only to end up sloping dramatically downward. And somewhere, a foot or two below the horizontal axis you’d find Now That You Got It.

When she first started doing solo stuff, Gwen was groundbreaking, quirky and fun. With this latest video, even she doesn’t seem to be convinced. She’s rehashing the same formula, but we’ve heard it all before: really dumb hooks and lyrics. She’s still trailing those damned Harajuku Girls around when they should have been dumped after the first album.

Lethal Bizzle - Police On My Back

Walthamstow’s finest rapper, Lethal Bizzle returns today with new single Police On My Back. We have only one piece of advice for you guys: turn up the volume and en-joy!

It’s riotous, loud, stupid and fun! No-one is going to claim Bizzle is the best thing in rap, but the man deserves credit for creating one of those rare gems that actually puts a long-lasting smile on yer face.

In truth, this should be the kind of anthem for people who’ve never had the police on their back, but want to pretend for a minute that they did.
