Dannii Minogue vs Jason Nevins - Touch Me Like That - Single Review

touch-me-like-that

It’s apparent from Dannii Minogue’s new video that she still sees herself as some kind of sex symbol. That’s unfortunate, because neither of the Minogue sisters are looking sexy at the moment. Kylie because she’s in remission from cancer, Dannii because of her big forehead and sunken cheekbones and those big fake funbags she likes to flaunt.  But we’d prefer not to see.

Kylie Minogue’s 2 Hearts Leaked Online

I heard Kylie’s new single 2 Hearts on Radio 1 today. A shockingly old fashioned way to release music, Kylie gave it a ‘radio only’ release. There isn’t even a video on YouTube yet - what the hell’s that about?

Even more old fashioned - the only place I can find the video is on Kylie’s own website. It’s not even flash embedded, you’ve got to stream it in Windows Media or Realplayer. How long has she been away?

Booty Luv - Don’t Mess With My Man

booty-luv-don't-mess-with-my-man Serial hit recyclers Booty Luv are back next week with their third single, a cover of Lucy Pearl’s Don’t Mess With My Man.

It isn’t a complicated formula - take a bunch of old-but-good dance tunes and give them a slick and sophisticated makeover. What Booty Luv do best is produce already memorable dance tracks with a contemporary twist.

Kosheen - Overkill

Overkill is the lead single from Kosheen’s third album, Damage.

Kosheen are another of those bands I’ve been vaguely aware of in the past, but rashly written off. The reason I’m saying that is because Overkill is actually quite a good song.

I did a bit of poking around for information about the band and the main thing I discovered is that the singer, Sian Evans draws numerous comparisons with Roisin Murphy.

Timbaland ft Keri Hilson: The Way I Are

timbaland-the-way-i-are In this one, Timbaland is giving a bit of a leg up to one of the singers on his Mosley Music record label, Keri Hilson. Can’t blame the guy either, if the rumors that he’s retiring are true, he’s going to want to push his artists pretty hard to keep the dough rolling in.

The Way I Are just screams out Timbaland: you can hear that strong synth running through the track alongside throbbing beats and bass. The addition of Hilson on vocals is a departure from Ms Furtado, and you come away with the feeling that either singer could have delivered the goods on this track.

Kleerup ft Robyn: With Every Heartbeat

robyn-with-every-heartbeat It would be easy to write this off as one of those repetitive old 90’s dance tracks that has an unknown female singer doing vocals. And in that respect, unless you’re familiar with no-surnamed Swedish singer/songwriter Robyn, this is another dollop of faceless pop.

Groove Armada ft Mutya Buena: Song 4 Mutya(Out Of Control)

The Groove Armada bunny Song-4-Mutya-coverreturns with a reinvigorated Mutya Buena. This song’s been doing the rounds for a while now, although it was only released last week (23 July 2007).

This, and Mutya’s last single will have critics wondering whether Sugababes have lost a key member. Let’s face it, with the electronic fuzz that dominates this single and the disco-pop sensibilities could have been a natural follow-on from the Sugababes’ Freak Like Me.

Groove Armada ft Stush - Get Down - Single Review

Hmmm. You know when you’ve got a cracker idea for a music video, but you haven’t got a song to play behind it? That’s what Groove Armada’s Get Down is - a backing track to a funky video.

I mean, if you turn the sound off on your TV, the video for Get Down is actually pretty entertaining. You’ve got a bunch of bunny rabbits dancing in the video, but they pop off to the lav for a bit of nookie and then…suddenly there’s more rabbits. So the rabbits keep copulating and multiplying and before you know it…well, you get the idea.

The problem is, you’ve got a passable song. Not a great tune. Groove Armada are capable of better than this. And that vocal (presumably by Stush?) - I’m not even sure what language she’s singing in.

Seriously.

Verdict? Crap. A music video that’s better without the music.

Amerie - Take Control - Single Review

Amerie. An artist with a deadly fear of wearing trousers. She looks a bit like Myleene Klass, doesn’t she? I sometimes like to imagine she’s from a parallel universe where Myleene had a music career instead of doing the lad’s mag circuit and taking cold showers in the jungle. Still, both girls run around in their pants a lot.

End Of The Road For Gorillaz

I read today that Damon Albarn has said that the Gorillaz project will disband after a movie score they’re slated to work on in September of this year:

The Blur singer said that the only project left for the cartoon band will be a film featuring a score composition, that has previously been linked to filmmaker and ‘Monty Python’ mastermind Terry Gilliam.

Speaking to BBC Radio 2, Albarn said: “We’re trying to make a film next, starting in September hopefully. It will be a film score. There won’t be another pop record.”

Reports suggest that the cartoon band members will act as alternative characters, as opposed to playing themselves.

I don’t think anyone expected Gorillaz to last this long, let alone forever. So like Simon it’s no surprise (especially with Albarn’s other committments) and I won’t be losing too much sleep this evening as a result of the sad news…
