Guidelines For The Next Carnival

At the minute, I’m getting a lot of dross submissions to the Carnival of Music. These include:

• Stuff that’s not related to music
• Posts that are too short, badly written or not even interesting
• Multiple submissions per author/blog

So, I’ve decided to draft up some quality guidelines for the carnival of music. Don’t bother submitting if your posts don’t comply with the following:

1. You must now link back to Unreality Music (http://music.unrealitytv.co.uk) to qualify for inclusion. This helps promote the carnival to others and will hopefully build up community around it.
2. Unrelated posts/ridiculously short posts/badly written posts won’t be considered. Likewise multiple submissions - your first submission will be the one I use, so make it a good one!
3. Try and stick to the categories if they’re set. Generally I want to see posts about recent mainstream releases, upcoming or unsigned bands, tributes to well-known artists or reviews of gigs, albums etc.
4. The next music carnival will be published on 26 October 2007. The submission deadline is 25 October 2007.
5. Submit your posts to the carnival of music submission page.

But enough about me, let’s get started with the latest carnival of music. This is our 3rd Carnival of Music on Unreality Music.

Today’s carnival comes under a couple of headings. Here they are:

Write About An Artist

• FitBuff (you heard right) has submitted a post telling us how the New York Jets are training to Mozart, which as any music buff will know is supposed to aid learning. I dare say that’s an unconventional approach to sports training…
• Deepak has dedicated an entire post to the Indian composer Madan Mohan. Nice to see some ethnic music make the list, but it would have been nicer to see some links to audio or video examples of Mohan’s work.
• We commented on Sir Elton’s desire to shut down the Internet earlier this week, but the Geek Sisters wanted to have their say too. Fine by us.

Unsigned Bands

• Patrick Silvestri writes in with a post about why bands shouldn’t try to get signed. Part 1 of Patrick’s series exposes the lesser-known aspects of record deals that people generally aren’t aware of.
• This next one almost deserves a post of its own - Sarah Wessman posts about Redmask’s aim of selling a million albums and showing the rest of the world that you CAN sell records without a major label deal. If I could make one comment guys - get some pictures up there, get a MySpace page, give us some free MP3s. It’s a great idea, but there’s more work to do!
• I loved Christine Kane’s post “How to play for 5,000 people who have no clue who you are“. Catchy title. Christine has 6 useful tips for your performance.
• Here’s a post from an unsigned artist - Arun wanted to share a story about his singing tendencies and a little clip of one of his songs.

Record Reviews

• Here’s a list of weird album reviews over at Zed Sounds. You know it’s weird when you’ve got Uri Geller’s album listed.

So, that’s it for part 3 of our music carnival. I’m thinking the carnival needs a little logo to give it some identity. Anyone fancy putting something together for us?

Footnote: Rickey didn’t exactly post anything that fit our categories, but he did write about the new streaming gadget that he has on his blog from last.fm. And since it’s Rickey, I let that post slip through…

• Mark Rayner’s back. And he’s brought some more of those godawful album covers. You’ve got to wonder what store he gets his music from…
• Jon sent in his latest shotgun rock and metal reviews. Can’t say I’ve heard of any of the bands, but it would be nice to see some links to the bands’ MySpace/Virb/whatever pages so we can check them out. Whaddaya say Jon?
• This looks like it might be worth a listen - a collection of surf guitar tunes from back in the day. As reviewed by Richie.

Unsigned Artists

• This post from Adam Pieniazek falls into two categories, as it is a review of the self-titled debut album of Ronald Jenkees, an unsigned artist. Ronald has quickly become an internet phenomenon through his YouTube videos and has recently released an album after a lot of encouragement from his fans.

Tributes To Admired Artists

• This submission is from the suspiciously named Tom Jones with a set of mural tributes to the rapper Mac Dre found in San Francisco.
• New blog on the block, Daily Guitarist has a list of links to great guitar tablature resources. Needless to say, if you want to salute your favourite artist, the best way to do it is by mangling their songs on guitar. For extra back catalogue destruction, try singing at the same time…

Charles Modiano is urging a fresh look at the rap world with a thought-provoking piece on how you can save hip-hop. On the subject of hip-hop, BeefJerkyBlog has a free hookup to the DefinitiveSwim album, so go check that out. Let me know if it’s any good.

Marc and Angel posted a great rundown of three online music stations that you should check out if you’re into discovering new artists. I’ll give you two more for free: Virb.com and MySpace. You might have to go hunting, but both sites have amazing music on them.

Tupelo Kenyon’s great personal development blog looks at the effects of music on personal development. A long post, but worth the read. While you’re at it, check out OFan’s post about the awesome healing powers of Olivia Newton-John….

Hands up if you’re a budding video director. You are? Well, Armani Blog tells us about a search for an upcoming music video director in their Passion At First Sight competition.

In possibly the most tenuous link in this carnival, Money Is The Way blog gives us biography of Blind Banker Jefferson. That’s right - being a banker would give me the blues too.

You want a short history of Radiohead? ‘Head’ on over to theRadiohead-Head blog, where they have all you need to know about the band…

Possibly the most fun post of the carnival - Riding With Rickey’s review of Macca’s new album. Writing about himself in the first person is a brilliant tactic. Gerard approves, Rickey!

D M Cook sent me a couple of different links, but I could only include one as this carnival is pretty link-heavy already! So go check out his review of Shpongle’s Tales Of The Inexpressible. I’m interested….wonder where I can hear a sample?

Album covers can become iconic designs that define an era. I’m thinking any Hendrix album cover, GNR’s Appetite For Destruction…things like that. But when album art goes wrong, that’s another story. Thanks to Mark for the link.

Mike Estep wrote in with a strongly felt post about how talent is overrated for musicians. Practice makes perfect and all that….
