We’re loving the new Biffy Clyro single, Machines at Unreality Music. In fact, it’s safe to say that Biffy Clyro are fast becoming a favourite band with us.
Machines is such a beautiful, melancholy song which I believe deals with the death of singer Simon Neil’s mother. I think because the song is so obviously personal, it’s one of those tracks that you listen to and have a lump in your throat by the end.
The lyrics in particular are just brilliant - in three lines, the numbness of grief is summed up, along with the realization that there is a different kind of life ahead:
I’ve started falling apart
I’m not savoring life
I’ve forgotten how good it can feel to be alive
I think there’s an optimistic ending implied in the lyrics “take these pieces and build them skywards”, the notion of rebuilding to counterpoint “I’ve started falling apart…”
Simon Neil has commented on the track: “This is an acoustic song we recorded on the last day in the studio. I wanted the album to end on a positive vibe. No matter what you go through there’s always hope. You can make yourself happy.”
Machines is the latest single (and closing track) on Biffy Clyro’s current album, Puzzle.
