Ash – You Can’t Have It All – Single Review

You’ve got to hand it to Ash, they’ve been on the scene for donkey’s years but you still wouldn’t class them as old farts. Newly a three-piece again, Tim Wheeler and the nameless others have seemingly dropped guitarist Charlotte Hatherley from their ranks amid unclear circumstances.

My feeling about Ash is that they’re almost permanently in danger of disappearing up their own arses. Occasionally they get the formula right (Burn Baby Burn), but You Can’t Have It All is particularly lacklustre. Bland, even. Could they be too sure of themselves?

The Beat Surrender describes it as one of “the most disappointing comeback singles I’ve heard from a band in years”. The general consensus is that Ash haven’t played their strongest hand by releasing this track. I agree. The tune is indie-by-numbers – verses are nondescript, padding out the proceedings until the inevitable sing-along-a-Tim chorus. Thankfully they decided to spice things up with what is technically called a “heavy bit” in the middle.

The video for You Can’t Have It All can only be described as ho-hum. Ash playing in pyramid formation under big flashing lights. Then there’s the bit where they ‘multiply’ a la White Stripes. Yay, loads of Tim Wheeler’s! Yay, loads of nameless drummers and bassists! Unfortunately, they forgot to ‘multiply’ their secret ingredient….
