I love this song!!! That frantic, pounding intro. Those urgent guitar riffs, bordering on surf guitar style. This isn’t the Arctic Monkeys, this is metal!

But oops, in comes the verse and with it Alex Turner’s familiar, heavily accented vocal. Brianstorm is what the Monkeys do best, telling seedy stories through their music. The Guardian music blog rightly commented that <q>It shows that Alex Turner still has the ability to dispassionately record not just what he sees around him but also his reaction to it</q>.

In the course of their very short career, I’ve always expected the Arctic Monkeys to have a very downbeat droll sound, a la Scummy Man. Brianstorm is a refreshing change, as it just bursts with energy and excitement.

This is also the first single to be lifted from their forthcoming album, Favourite Worst Nightmare. I didn’t bother to buy the first album, but I may just splash out on this. Depends on what the second single sounds like though ;)
